The purpose of the Citywide Parent Council is to

  • Involve parents in addressing and responding to educational issues in the Lowell Public Schools;
  • Provide an open forum for discussions regarding school issues and voted policies;
  • Provide a mechanism for parent representation;
  • Give its members the responsibility of keeping their respective schools informed.

How does Citywide Parent Council operate?

  • The Executive Board (elected each May) plans and conducts a monthly Citywide Parent Council Meeting;
  • Each school elects two CPC representatives (Lowell High elects eight) whose responsibilities are described below;
  • The monthly CPC meetings try to address the issues that parents feel are most important;
  • Special subcommittees may be formed to address issues that are particularly important (such as safety or academics).
  • The Executive Board also meets with the Superintendent of Schools each month.

The CPC representatives from each school should

  • Attend and participate in monthly CPC meetings;
  • Give your principal a written report of what was discussed at the monthly CPC meeting;
  • Keep in touch with members of your school's parent organization. Bring issues of concern to the PTO to the attention of the CPC Executive Board;
  • Keep in touch with members of your School Site Council. Bring issues of concern to the School Site Council to the attention of the CPC Executive Board;
  • Let your school's PTO and School Site Council know about the issues discussed at the monthly CPC meetings;
  • Be listed as your school's telephone contact for parents who have school-related problems or need information;
  • Recruit parents from your school to attend CPC meetings;
  • Join the CPC electronic mailing list to keep informed and to pass information and questions on to the Executive Board. To join the electronic mailing list, send an e-mail message to Richard-Howe@comcast.net.
